IsraelWire, February 26th, 1999:
US Industry Says Israel Major Source of CD Piracy
(IsraelWire-2/26-1999) US copyright industries said last week that Israel was a major source of pirated music, movie and software compact discs and urged US trade officials to take action. The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA), which represents copyright industries, asked US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky to name Israel as a ''priority foreign country'' under US trade laws, a designation that could lead to trade sanctions.
Israel is a key source of pirated CDs, which can be made at very low costs, and a major transshipment point for bootleg CDs. The government has ignored pleas for a crackdown, IIPA President Eric Smith said. By next January, Israel must come into compliance with a global agreement on intellectual property rights, he said.
The group also asked that Kuwait be named a priority country if it fails to enact a copyright protection law by April 30 and urged trade officials to pay close attention to piracy in Mexico, Macao, Italy, Russia, Turkey and Poland. Smith said governments needed to pay more attention to the role of organized crime in producing and distributing pirated CDs.
